On 22nd September, residents and staff at Harwood Court Care Home came together to mark Hannah’s 100th birthday, a remarkable milestone in a life filled with family, hard work and adventure.

Hannah was born in Benwell and grew up in Scotswood, one of six children. She left school at the age of 14 and began working in a launderette, where she stayed for seven years. Later, she took on roles at Vickers Armstong factory and even spent some time working on a farm. At 19, she married John, and together they began raising their family.

Their three children Lesley, John and Linda, were followed in time by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, who all remained a source of pride and joy.
In her younger years, Hanna loved swimming and could often be found at Scotswood baths after a day’s work.

At home, she was rarely without knitting by her chair, always working on a new project.

With John, she shared a passion for ballroom dancing, and many happy evenings were spent on the dancefloor.

Travel was another of Hanna’s joys. From New Zealand and Singapore to Blackpool and Benidorm, she visited destinations near and far.
For the past three years, Hanna had been part of the Harwood Court community, enjoying later life surrounded by care and companionship. Her 100th birthday was a fitting celebration of a century shaped by love, resilience, and family.
